In the late 1940s, India emerged as an independent nation with a vision of equal opportunity for all citizens. The 1948 Sarkar Committee report led to the establishment of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to provide world-class technical education. Starting with IIT Kharagpur in 1950, six more campuses were added by 2001: Bombay (1958), Madras (1959), Kanpur (1959), Delhi (1961), Guwahati (1994), and Roorkee (2001).
To meet growing demand, eight new IITs were established in 2008–2009 on the recommendation of the SK Joshi Committee, followed by eight more between 2012 and 2016. Today, there are 23 IITs offering degrees across 37+ disciplines in engineering, technology, and management.
IITs have become synonymous with technological and business excellence. Their alumni, now global leaders, have bolstered India’s reputation as a hub of innovation and expertise.
PanIIT ANZ is the Australia & New Zealand wide body instituted with the goal to connect members with Pan-IIT communities, chapters, and their alma maters, providing resources to support personal and professional growth. PanIIT ANZ fosters networking with businesses, academia, and industries, encourages alumni to make a positive impact in ANZ, and promotes innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development across the region.
IIT alumni in Australia and New Zealand have established a strong presence across industries such as technology, finance, consulting, and academia. IIT alumni hold leadership roles in multinational corporations, driving innovation and business growth in the region. PanIIT community actively fosters collaboration, networking, and professional development through regional IIT chapters. Many contribute to startups and entrepreneurial ventures, enhancing the technological landscape of Australia and New Zealand. The alumni achievements highlight the global impact of IITians and strengthen ties between the ANZ and India.
